THEY FOUGHT FOR FREEDOM
HELEN SUZMAN

A PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN SERIES

“I stand for simple justice, equal opportunity and human rights. They are indispensable elements in a democratic society and well worth fighting for.”

Throughout her 36-year career as a liberal MP in an all-male, all-white Parliament, Helen Suzman stood up for what she believed was right, campaigning fearlessly against Apartheid laws such as the Immorality Act, forced removals, and the pass laws. By raising critical issues that would have been kept from the public, she gave a voice to those who had been silenced, in turn, helping to expose truths about Apartheid.

Her courage reminds us that there is strength in standing alone for what is right.

THEY FOUGHT FOR FREEDOM
STEVE BIKO

A PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN SERIES

One of the most damaging crimes of Apartheid was that it led black people to believe they were inferior to white people. Steve Biko was someone who never believed this lie. Empowering a generation with messages of self-worth and pride, Biko showed black people that they had a culture and a history of which they should be proud. Biko’s powerful ideas became known as Black Consciousness and inspired a movement that was crucial to the struggle against Apartheid. Biko died in detention in 1977. His ideas, however, have lived on. Though silenced by brutality, his legacy of bold resistance speaks louder than ever.
